Summer of '41; SJU; basketball

Since last weekend it was SSDD during the week (sound familiar).  Since today is Saturday it was a bit different.  In the morning I went to the bank in town to renew some time deposits for my IRA accounts, and then stopped by the firehouse for coffee.  As I finished Five O’clock Lightning, I stopped by the library to return it and take out something else – Baseball in ’41 by Robert Creamer.

In the afternoon Ellen, Eileen and I went to St. John’s University to participate in the 4th annual Blessing of the Couples Mass and reception.  We missed it last year because my cousin got married.  There is a Mass in the St. Thomas More Church on campus where the couples renew the wedding vows and receive a blessing from one of the priests.  Once the Mass was over we walked over to a reception, this time in the foyer of the law school building.  Personally I do not that the location was the best when compared to other rooms.  This one was small and therefore crowded.  In prior years they had name tags made so that you could see who the other attendees were.  This year they did not and I complained to a member of the alumni relations about that.  She said that it takes too much time to give them out.  I personally think that it’s a poor excuse and definitely put a damper on the evening.  So since I could not recognize anyone that either Ellen or I knew, we left after about 30 minutes.  However, the petite-fours and champagne were good.

On the basketball scene, I have been following the New York Knicks’ new guard, Jeremy Lin.  Besides being a good player, he also comes across as a class act.  So naturally it’s “let’s go Knicks” for the rest of the season.
