XLII & XXXXIX (42 and 49)
The New York Giants just did the impossible, winning the Super Bowl as definite underdogs. It was quite a close game from the first kickoff, so that made it exciting. They proved that they had the right stuff, despite a 0-2 start. Once they made the playoffs, momentum was on their side. They made all New Yorkers proud. I watched the game at home until the 4th quarter when Eileen claimed the good TV set (the only one hooked up to the cable). So I drove to the firehouse to watch the rest of the game there. Why start World War III over Super Bowl XLII? Besides an exciting football game, the commercials were pretty good, and Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers’ half time show was quite entertaining too. Again, congratulations to the New York Giants for a fantastic season. ______________________________________________________ It’s also a sad anniversary today, since 49 years ago today was the “day the music died”. Buddy Holly, the Big Bopper and Ritchie Valens were killed when their plane – American Pie – crashed in Iowa. RIP guys, we still miss you.

Citifield, the Iron Triangle, Malaysian cuisine
Since the 27th it’s generally been SSDD at work, but we did wind down for the month end. I am still following basketball, and watched the Georgetown-Seton Hall game ( Georgetown won, 73-61). Mets fans are ecstatic that the Mets landed Johan Santana onto their pitching rotation. Perhaps he is the last page to the puzzle. Now that they puzzle is done, hopefully the Mets will make it to the World Series, again, and win this time. 1986 is a long time ago. On Saturday we went to visit my mom & dad in Queens. I decided to go for a walk thought Flushing Meadow Park and then past Shea Stadium. I was hoping for a few cricket matches on the pitches there, but since it was Saturday, there were no matches, and only a handful of soccer players practicing and scrimmaging. I then went past Shea Stadium and also got to check out the new ballpark, Citifield. It is going to look like Ebbets Field (only larger and more modern). I was able to make out the rotunda, and the sides of the new park look like what was along the sides of Ebbets Field. I then went past the Iron Triangle, which is a right triangle shaped set of streets across from the Shea site, and the home of junkyards and other auto related businesses. The streets are not paved and have no sewers. Since it rained on Friday, the main street, Willets Point Boulevard, was flooded, as were the avenues that intersect it. The point in the Iron Triangle where the long arm and the hypotenuse meet is at 126th Street and Roosevelt Avenue. Since that is also a corner of the Shea Stadium property, (and soon Citifield's) I made that the source of my main Yahoo address (roosevelt126). That is where I am standing in the picture below. After my walk Ellen and I went to dinner at our favorite Malaysian restaurant, Curry Leaves, which is located on 40th Road across from the Flushing Long Island Railroad station. We are all excited here in New York about the Super Bowl, especially since a New York team, the Giants, is in it. Go Big Blue.

new job; new national holiday?; new web-page
Since last weekend I have been hired by a new company, located on the East Side of Manhattan. I was actually working there in a temporary-to-permanent capacity since Boxing Day (December 26). That was because my prior firm forced me out in early December 2007. It turns out that my old office mates were snitching on me continuously, for petty things like talking too loud on the phone, slamming the file cabinet doors, being on the Internet (as they were too); and other bullshit incidents. They even claimed that I demanded too much space (more BS). I had been making references to the doghouse in prior entries, as that was part of the thumbscrews being tightened. That’s okay; I am not there any longer, got a severance package, proving that it was not my fault. Monday the 11th is my first day as a permanent employee at the new firm. We are all counting the days until Opening Day. Most of us baseball fans think that it should be a national holiday, for the national pastime. However, it’s not likely to happen. Being an Internet junkie, I created another web-page about the trip to South Bend during December 2007. The URL is http://www.geocities.com/four_and3/southbend2007.html. Sorry, there is no guest book. I was also able to figure out why the Yahoo Geocities web pages were being distorted. It was because of the weather boxes. They have increased in size and push text and pictures out of alignment. While I always like to know what the weather is in Islip and other cities, it’s better to eliminate a cause of problems.

gums; NBA All Stars; turkey shoot
Since the last blog entry from February 11 I got used to being a permanent employee at my new firm. The people are quite nice and nobody is a snitch. They even have a softball team, based here in the New York office (unlike the prior firm, where it was based in an outer office). This team will be part of the Yorkville Sports Association league, and will play in Central Park, as well as the Lower East Side, Chelsea, and a few other spots. I cannot wait for that Opening Day! I also had my fire company meeting on Monday evening, but nothing unusual happened. Eileen has to have dental surgery to have gum grafts, so that the receding gum would not expose some teeth and cause their loss in the future. Her appointment was on the 12 th, my second day as a permanent employee. I could not take the day off, but my boss let me come in late. The dental surgeon’s office was in Great Neck, and when it was over, Ellen and I accompanied Eileen home in the car. Luckily she came out of the anesthesia early, so I did not have to go all the way home with them, but only to Babylon where I got the train into Manhattan. I managed to walk into the office at 2:15 PM, and made up most of the time by staying until 8. The National Basketball Association’s All Star Weekend has just concluded, and while I could not make it to New Orleans to see the events in person, I managed to watch several of them on TV. Friday night was the Freshmen (rookies) vs. the Sophomores, and the Sophomores won by over 20 points. I watched it at the firehouse, since Ellen and Eileen were watching the Britcoms on the good set at home. This Friday night was also the company for the other engine company, and while I was watching the game, we got a fire call (for an automatic alarm). Since I know that quite a few of the members were drinking, I decided to stay behind. Besides, they were back in a few minutes. While it’s still only an exhibition game, I still wish that the game was a bit closer. The East West game, played on Sunday evening, was a nail biter since the scores were close. Since I live in New York, and three of may favorite NBA teams (the Knicks, Nets, and Magic) are in the Eastern Conference, I was happy for the East to win the game. I missed the NBA events of Saturday, since it was the 3rd Saturday of the month and the 3 of us went bowling at the East Islip Lanes with the St. Mary’s Bowling League. I made history for myself by bowling a turkey – 3 strikes in a row – and getting my highest score so far (145). If I keep this up, I could break 200 by 2009.

NBA; THe Spiderwick Chronicles; new pages; fire school
During the week it’s generally SSDD: got to work, come home, and hit the Internet. There was the Islip Fire Department meeting on the 19th, but all we did was meet and discuss business. On Friday evening I went to the firehouse to watch some NBA games: the Pistons-Nets and Wizards-Cavaliers. The Pistons and Cavaliers each won. On Sunday Ellen, Eileen and I went to see The Spiderwick Chronicles at a movie theater in West Babylon. Like the Harry Potter films, it was fantasy with good special effects and an interesting plot. Some of the creatures are common to both: basilisks, trolls, and boggarts. We each liked it and recommend it to all.
On Sunday I also created two new Yahoo Geocities pages on the foreign URL’s: http://in.geocities.com/route9x/southbend2007.html http://uk.geocities.com/altoona43/biography2.html, The first is on Yahoo India and is another version of our trip to South Bend two months ago. The second in on Yahoo UK & Ireland and is another unauthorized biography about yours truly. The foreign Geocities require knowledge of HTML coding, and I am slowly teaching myself the basics.
Yesterday evening we had fire school and it was to get qualified using the Scott pack self contained breathing apparatus. We did not have to do any searches, but just go through 4 hazards: a window, reduced profile, low ceiling, and an entanglement.
