Belated Happy New Year; go Big Blue!!

Not much has happened since New Year’s Eve.  On the 1st we went to see Johnny Depp in Sweeney Todd – The Demon barber of Fleet Street.  We enjoyed it but would not recommend it for the squeamish.   I did not watch too many bowl games, but did see the New York Giants beat the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on the 6th to advance to the next round – against the Dallas Cowboys!      Other than that, it has been the same stuff, different day (SSDD).  There have not even been any interesting fires or ambulance calls for a while.

Super Bowl bound; 112 average; working fire

It’s been quite busy for me at work since my last entry here.  When I get home I am a bit pooped, and like I mentioned in the last entry, during the week it’s generally SSDD.
Last Sunday the New York Giants beat the Dallas Cowboys in a nice upset.  A little while ago they beat the Green bay Packers 23-20 in overtime.  They could have won it in regulation time if they had not missed two field goals, or went for the field goal at the 4th down during the first half.  However, they did manage to beat the Pack in 0 degree weather in Green Bay.   So it’s another trip to the Super Bowl for Big Blue.  Good luck to them, and may they upset the Patriots and win it all.
Late this afternoon, around 3:30, we had a working fire at a house that is vacant but is for sale, since there was an open house earlier today.  It turns out that the rear enclosed porch had caught fire, whether from an overheated electrical line or due to a cigarette from the open house.  When we arrived there (I was on the ladder truck this time) I ended up bringing some ladders in to the yard, and then helping with taking down the siding from the outside of the room that was on fire.  It’s a good thing that firefighters wear helmets, since I managed to get bonked on my head with some debris, and then, when I was a backup man on a charged water line, kept banging my head on the pipes in the basement where the fire originated.  When it was all over and time to leave, I helped the younger guys pack the hose away on the hose beds on one of the engines.  As it was only about 25 degrees out, water on the pavement, and also on my gloves and turnout coat, had begun to freeze.
Last night we went bowling at the East Islip Lanes with the St. Mary’s Bowling League.  In December I missed breaking 100 in all three games by ending up with a 96 in one game.  Last night I managed to break 100 in all three games and have a 112 average.  Maybe I'll get score an average of around 130 in February?

fire calls; basketball; new webpage

This week has been somewhat interesting since the last blog entry.  While it’s still basically SSDD during the week, this weekend we had a few interesting fire and ambulance calls.  Yesterday evening there was a call at a new town house complex as a result of smoke detectors going off.  I ended up as the “can man” since I was on the ladder truck instead of the engine.  The “can man” carried a water fire extinguisher and a 6 foot pike pole, on top of wearing self contained breathing apparatus.  A water fire extinguisher is quite heavy, since we all know that a gallon of water weighs 62 pounds.  Needless to say, I learned that I have to lift a lot more weights at the gym soon.  This morning around 4 am we had an ambulance call at a one family house, to tend to a drug overdose case.  Our patient was a 25 year old lady, who apparently overdosed on prescription medication (similar to Heath Ledger?).  We took her to the hospital in Bay Shore and while in the emergency room; her dad told the nurse that she suffered from depression.  We then left to go back to the firehouse, but we hope that she makes a full recovery. With baseball a couple of months away, I have been following basketball lately, at the college and professional levels.  I had the misfortune to see St. John’s University lose miserably to Louisville last night.  Thanks to the Internet and Windows Media, I got to listen to the Temple University-St. Joseph’s University game.  While I was pulling for Temple (after all, Bill Cosby is an alumnus), the Temple Owls lost to St. Joseph’s 68-67.  It was quite a close contest, as the lead kept changing throughout most of the game.  Since I work in Manhattan, on Wednesday I took the time to walk over to the NBA Store on 5th Avenue to relax and shoot a few baskets at a game that is set up in the store’s basement. I also had some time to create a new web-site about our trip to South Bend last month.  This site is on Bravenet.com, and its URL is:
