wakes and soccer

Today Eileen had the usual Sunday morning soccer practice and scrimmage with the West Islip Soccer Club.

In the afternoon we drove to Manhasset to attend the wake of my aunt, who died from cancer a few days ago at the age of 71.  While I enjoyed talking to several of my relatives, I wish that it had been under better circumstances.  When we got back home we decided to go out to dinner, at a Mexican restaurant called Meson Ole in East Islip.  It was in particle celebration of my birthday last week, and for Ellen’s which will be on the 16th.

We did not have any interesting fire calls over the weekend, other that at the Islip Animal Shelter where the electrical system shorted out and they called us.  Once we got there the chief advised the staff to call an electrician, and sent us back home.

Veterans Day 2007

Happy Veterans Day to everyone.  Unfortunately, I did not make it to the parade in Manhattan this morning.  I had a fairly full plate:
  • Working with my neighbor to fix a rattling sound in Ellen’s car;
  • The last session until spring for the West Islip Soccer Club;
  • Church (I am the churchgoer for the 3 of us);
  • Visiting my mom & dad.
While I could not make it to the parade, I extend a thank you to all of the other veterans out there who served, often when the country hated us for doing so (like in the Vietnam Era).
Since we got to my parents’ place a bit late, Ellen and I stuck close by.  Besides, there was track work being done on the Flushing subway line and no trains went to Main Street.  To go to Manhattan meant getting on a shuttle bus to 111th Street to switch to the trains.   We decided to go to dinner near by at a Malaysian restaurant near the Long Island Railroad station, called Restaurant Malaysia.  We have been there before and always enjoyed it.
On the football front, the New York Giants lost to the Dallas Cowboys, while the Pittsburgh Steelers beat the Cleveland Browns.  The Jets did not lose this weekend, since they had an open date.

bowling; the doghouse again; blowing in the wind

Since it has finally cooled down a bit, the leaves really started to fall from the trees in my yard and in the woods by the house.  The problem is that quite a few of the land in the rain gutters.  Since they normally don’t blow out by themselves, we have to do it.  That meant using a leaf blower with a snorkel type of attachment and try to blow them out of the rain gutter,   was able to get most of them out, but since it rained a few days ago, the wet leaves don’t come out too easily.  The fun part now begins, since I had to climb onto a ladder and scoop them out with my hands.  Even with gloves, my hands smelled a bit of compost when I was done.  Since today was the third Saturday, Ellen, Eileen and I went bowling at the East Islip Lanes with the St. Mary’s League.  Like what happened several times before, the team paired off with us did not show up, so we had the two alleys to ourselves.  I ended up with a 98 average, but reached 100 or better in two of the games.  Somehow, the middle game was poor, and I only got an 80.  Maybe I was releasing the ball too early.  However, no matter how bad our scores were, we all had a good time.

There is no good time at work.  It turns out that at review time I was told of several things that I was guilty of over the last 12 months, most for the first time. The snitch also told the supervisor that I sometimes forgot to cover my mouth when I coughed or sneezed, and talked too loud on the phone.  I was also guilty of demanding too much space and not respecting the space of others.  Most of it is total bullshit, but I see the writing on the wall: time to jump ship.

We also had a fire call at an apartment complex near the high school.  While it turned out to be food on the stove catching fire, it was banged out as a general alarm.  I ended up on the ladder truck, despite being in an engine company.  By the time we arrived at the complex, the residents had put the fire out themselves.  However, the chiefs and the officers still had to check the apartment.  When it was over, the chief ordered all of the crews form the engines and the ladder truck to meet by the apparatus for a talk.  He was quite pissed off that the first due engine did not stop right next to the hydrant, which was right next to the apartment complex’s main entrance.  Had there been a working fire, they would have had to stretch several hundred more feet of hose, and not be next to the hydrant.  Therefore he told us that we all made a serious blunder, but since the fire was out by the time we got there, we were lucky that no firefighters were injured or worse.

This afternoon I got to watch part of the LSU-Ole Miss football game.  The Tigers were winning at half time, despite being the visiting team (the final score was 41-24 in favor of LSU).

Happy Thanksgiving to all

I hope that everyone had a happy Thanksgiving.    We hosted a total of eight people today, and I spent a good part of the morning and afternoon helping Ellen with preparing the dinner and cleaning the house.  However, I was having trouble with my home computer as files would not attach to e/mails, I could not always write in my blogs, could not easily customize my multiply.com and Yahoo 360 pages; and pages took forever to open.  I spent quite a bit of time on the phone with a Dell Service representative, despite getting cut off on the phone several times.  However, we re-installed Windows XP, and so far it’s running well.
I managed to watch a part of the Packers/Lions game, and not surprisingly, the Packers won.  While I did not watch it (mercifully, I guess) the Cowboys beat the Jets 34-3.

finishing up the weekend

It was the typical 4 day weekend for me after Thursday.  On Friday it was the usual for a day off: errands, the Internet, fire calls.  On Saturday my fire company was detailed (as we always are) to decorate the sub station in the north part of town.  Since only 7 members showed up, and most of the lights had burned out since last year, not many decorations went up.  Still, we managed to put up some stars over the apparatus bays, lights over shrubs, and a Christmas tree in the lobby.
Yesterday was Ellen and my 28th anniversary.  We did not do anything special, since we are saving money for a trip next month.  However, we did enjoy some fine Long Island wine in the evening.
Since Eileen enjoys visiting her grandparents, today we went to visit them in Queens.  As we normally do, Eileen stayed with them and enjoyed her videos, while Ellen and I went out.  We ended up in Manhattan to go shopping, and the first stop was Lord & Taylor’s flagship store on 5th Avenue.  They had just put up the animated Christmas windows on the ground floor, and this year showed scenes from New York, Copenhagen, Venice, Vienna, and Paris, as well as children from all over the world in the woods.  Ellen ended up buying a new coat.  I just hinted on what I’d like to see under our tree next month.  After that we went to the Barnes & Noble store to get a gift certificate for my company’s holiday party’s grab bag next month.  Then it was back to Flushing for dinner at Green Papaya on Prince Street. I had reviewed it early last year on Yahoo and it’s still great.
About the only downer today was that the New York Giants lost to the Minnesota Vikings 41-17 this afternoon.  Since several members of Big Blue are also on my fantasy football team, it looks as if it’s a double loss.  The only bright side was that I never bet money on games, since I would lose my shirt.
