new pub, strategies; sports news

This was a fairly interesting weekend.  On Friday I met the other members of the Islip Fire Department at a new pub/restaurant in Islip called Maxwell’s.  It’s on Montauk Highway (High Street) around the corner from the main station.  Maxwell’s used to be a dive called Hutley’s that was the young kid’s hangout.  In all of the years that I lived in Islip (since 1984) I had never gone into Hutley’s as a customer, only as an ambulance crew member.  Maxwell’s is clean, with a large selection of imported beers and microbrews.  The restaurant side, according to some other band members who have eaten there, is quite good.  In the future my wife, daughter and I plan to check out the restaurant side for ourselves.
Yesterday morning I went to a session at St. John’s University called Employers Tell All.  A panel of people from several companies spoke about how they screen out potential candidates to work at their companies.  Right now, despite the BS at my job, I am trying to make it work out.  It’s only a couple of co-workers that I feel are making my tenure unenjoyable.  One of the panel members recommended that we read The Art of War, written in China 2300 years ago.   The book could advise me on how to properly deal with these co-workers and come out on top.
The Georgetown Hoyas lost to Ohio State on Saturday afternoon, so the Hoyas will not advance to the finals.  However, I am happy that they made it to the Final Four.
My daughter’s soccer (football) season with the West Islip Soccer Club began this morning.  I ended up helping her with her kicks.  While I will never be the next Beckham or Pele, I did play for my parish team in elementary and high school, and remember some of the things that the coaches taught me.  I was able to dribble the soccer ball a bit and kick it to her and get her to kick it to me or into the net.  Next week is an open date since it’s Easter Sunday.  We return to the pitch on April 15th.  We then headed to Queens to visit my mom & dad.  My wife and I did some shopping and had dinner at the Green Papaya on Prince Street.
When we got home I watched most of the Mets Cardinals game on ESPN.  The Mets won 6-1.  So it’s one down, 161 to go.

hello again

In the last 3 weeks I have been going nuts at work, but learned that the mamanger of my department is leaving in 2 weeks.  Hopefully the new manager will be a bit better.

The 2007 Major League Baseball season began and so far both of the two New York teams are doing well, as well as another favorite of my teams, the Dodgers.  Maybe we will see another subway series!

At the fire brigade we had a special election to fill in the position of Chief of the Department since our head honcho opted to resign.  His two underlings  would advance and we needed to fill in the third in command's position.  After some unusual politicking, the seconds in command advance to Chief of the Department and we ended up with a decent man at Second Assistant.

Most baseball fans here commemorated the 60th anniversary of Jackie Robinson's breaking of Major League Baseball's onerous color barrier (apartheid in sport). The ceremonies conducted by the Dodgers  (Jackie's team when he played) were quite impressive.

Sadly, we here in the US are shocked and saddened by the terrible massacre at the Virginia Tech Univewrsity campus.  Our hearts go out to the victims' families, as well as to the surviving students and faculty members.  It's going to be a very long time until things heal at VT.
