visiting the doghouse; St. Patrick's Day parade

I am glad that the weekend is here.  It’s been rough at work.  One of my coworkers accused me of screwing up on cash receipts sent to one of my clients.  Apparently one of my clients, an investment fund, sent the firm funds to pay an invoice.  Cash receipts informed me that the figures don’t match anything open on my client, and looks like an overpayment.  I told that to my partner and he said that we should send the money back.  After he prepared the memorandum to cash receipts we sent the investment fund back about $1,500.  Then earlier this week one of the cash receipts staff e/mails me to tell me that I should research my clients more thoroughly, as it turns out that the is another client number for that same investment fund under a different partner and the $1,500 was meant for that client number.  Why didn’t they contact that person?  When I worked in cash receipts at my first firm, way back in 1990 and 1991, it was cash receipts job to research the clients.  So I got the e/mail telling me to do their job, and all of management was copied.  What I found interesting was the grammatical errors and misspelled words.  Yet the supervisors did not say anything to her.  3 months ago I transposed a number in a date on an e/mail and was on the carpet being told that since my e/mails have errors (an isolated incident) management was worried that my bills for my clients may have errors.  I always proof read my e/mails before I send them out.  However, I a bit dyslexic and that is a slight problem.
On a happier note, this afternoon I went with the Islip Fire Department to the Bay Shore St. Patrick’s Day parade and marched with the Department’s band.  Not that many other local fire departments joined us, other than some of the ones located on Fire Island (such as Kismet, Saltaire, and Fair Harbor).  There were several divisions of the Ancient Order of Hibernians in the parade, as well as Emerald Societies.  An added treat were some antique car clubs, with cars from the 1910’s (a Ford Model T) to the 1960’s.  I must be getting old because I remember the 1960’s cars when they were new.  The groups marched down the High Street called Main Street (also known as Montauk Highway) from the eastern boundary of Bay Shore to St. Patrick’s Catholic Church before we dissipated.  After that we walked down Main Street to a pub called the Nutty Irishman, where I enjoyed one round of locally brewed beer (which was in the Department’s tab) before I called my wife to come and pick me up.

On the baseball front, the Mets lost a spring training game to the Detroit Tigers yesterday, and today in 10 innings to the Washington Nationals.  Luckily these are only exhibition games.

over sleeping; St. Patrick's Day on campus

Since it’s a workday I don’t normally write a blog entry since it’s usually SSDD.  Today was a bit different.  Since we all switched to daylights saving time on Sunday morning, my inner clock is way off the mark.  So this morning I woke up at 7:20 AM instead of 6:15 AM.  I missed my usual train, but still had time to get the 7:57 at Islip.  I rush there and when 7:57 comes around there is no train.  There were no announcements on their state of the art PA system either as to why it did not show up.  Luckily a friend from the Islip Fire Department was there and we drove to Babylon, which is where the electric service begins (or ends, depending which way you are going).  I just missed an express but the local got me in to Penn at around 9:45 and I arrived in the office at 10 AM.  Luckily nobody said anything to me.
In the evening I went to St. John’s University to listen to a talk about careers in communications.  I most likely would not change careers since at 50+ and no experience, I would not land a decent position.  I still listened and after wards saw a poster announcing a St. Patrick’s Day Party sponsored by the University Gaelic Society.  So I headed to the University Center and got in as an alumnus.  There was some Irish dancing, including how to do step dancing, which was shown by members of a dancing school.  Then a band came out and played some Irish folk songs, as well as jigs and reels. Then came the dinner: parsnips, beef stew, shepherds pie, cabbage, and a few other Irish goodies – all of which I would never make at home.  There were also free green beads and green derbies on the tables, which I took for my daughter.  Since I had called my wife to pick me up, I had to leave around 9 PM to meet her by the main gate.
I could have taken the Long Island Railroad home, but that would mean an unreliable ride on the bus to the Jamaica station.  On the way to the campus, I took a bus from the Jamaica LIRR station, and besides the wait for the bus, it was a slow ride.  This way by car we could all keep each other company for the 40 mile ride.

On the spring training scene, the Mets beat the Cleveland Indians, while the Yankees lost to the Reds.

sleet; Brooklyn; team photos; St. Patrick's Day plans

I am glad that it’s Friday.  The nice weather that we had earlier this week was too good to last, as it started sleeting this morning, and so far we have about 2 inches of the hard wet stuff.

Today I received an 8 x 10 photo that the coach sent me of my 2006 softball team – the guys who found new ways to lose but also news ways to have fun.   It’s also been saved to the c-drive and hopefully will find its way to the various softball websites that I created.  When that is done I will mentione the URL's and links.  Right now I cannot seen to uplead the picture from my c-drive.

In the 1990’s a man named Carl Prince wrote a book called Brooklyn’s Dodgers – The Bums, the Borough and the Best of Baseball.  It’s about the almost symbiotic relationship between the team and the borough of Brooklyn.  Right now I am only up to the second chapter, but it has my interest.  It also is making me wish that I grew up in Brooklyn instead of next door in Queens.  However, I did go to high school in Brooklyn, and my first full time civilian job was in the Borough of Churches.  My late mom-in-law was a Brooklyn Irish lady, and several of her friends and family lived in Bay Ridge.  While the Dodgers are now in California, we now have the Brooklyn Cyclones.  It might be Short Season A level baseball, but it is professional baseball none the less.
Tomorrow is St. Patrick’s Day.  I have no plans to go into Manhattan, since it is going to be a madhouse.  Besides, we have our St. Mary’s Bowling League in the evening.  I have gone to the Manhattan parades in prior years, including actually marching in the 1976 parade in a County Tipperary club with my prior Irish born lady friend (before I met my wife).

Since we will be home, I plan to enjoy some Irish music by U2 and/or the Chieftains, and maybe read some of James Joyce writings.

the last few days

Since Friday evening I was busy around the house, went bowling, and visited my mom & dad. Friday evening we got hit with an ice & sleet storm, and by Saturday morning there was about 2 inches of the white stuff on the ground. The bad part was that since it was sleet, it was too hard to shovel, so the driveway did not get cleared out. I was able to do the usual errands in town, and in the evening the 3 of us went bowling at East Islip Lanes. Like last month, the other team did not show up so we had the two alleys to ourselves.  However, it was not my night and I only averaged an 85 in the 3 games. But we still had fun and plan to go back to East Islip Lanes on our own and not just with the St. Mary’s League. On the Internet I was able to find another free web site provider and managed to create another web page. The URL address is:

http://www.ironmen8.1sweethost.com/ssbilly.html I am still trying to install a guest book. This page also pays tribute to the 4 Ironmen of baseball.

Today we went to visit my mom & dad in Flushing. I managed to go for a walk in my old neighborhood and through Flushing Meadow Park. Even though the fields were still snow covered, I saw guys playing soccer under the elevated Van Wyck Expressway. They proved that where there is a will, there is a way. When I got back my wife and I went to dinner at an Afghan restaurant on Main Street, called Kabul Kabob. I had a beef stew and my wife had a beef shish kabob. The service was quite good, considering that we walked in when several families were having dinner and taking up several tables. I recommend it highly and will try to write a review in Yahoo.

I have been following the NCAA March Madness and am overjoyed that Georgetown University is in the Sweet 16. While I never attended the school, I have always admired the university, even before the son of a close friend and a nephew of mine attended there.  So for me it’s Georgetown all the way.

On March 19 my daughter turned 17.  Where did the time go? We missed a St. Patrick’s Day baby by two days. It's interesting in that she was born on St. Joseph's Day, which is an important Catholic feast day. In elementary school I had the Sisters of St. Joseph teaching me. Their motherhouse is in the next town north of Islip, called Brentwood. For 8 years I heard about Brentwood, yet never was there. In 1975, when I visited Brentwood for the first time to attend an Irish music festival, called a cailaigh [sp] at the motherhouse, I felt a sense of déjà vu as if I had been there before. On March 20, 2004 the Islip Fire Department marched in the Brentwood St. Patrick’s Day parade, which ended at the convent grounds. I got to talk to several of the nuns living at the motherhouse about my former teachers, most of who are either deceased or left the order.

Chicago; cricket; LIRR mess

On Friday (March 23) evening I met my wife and daughter outside my office building for a night on Broadway. We first had dinner at a Spanish restaurant called Mesón Sevilla on Restaurant Row (the 300 block of
West 46th Street
). We have eaten there before when at the theater and always liked it. After dinner we walked to the Ambassador Theater to see Chicago for the 4th time. It’s my daughter’s favorite and it was a birthday present to her (she was 17 on the 19th). This time the role of Roxie Hart was played by Bebe Neuwirth (Lilith from the TV show Cheers). We enjoyed the show and though that Bebe played Roxie as well as Grechen Mol and Robin Givens did in 2 of the earlier performances that we went to.

Getting home was an experience. We had to walk from
49th Street
to Penn Station at
34th Street
. It’s only 15 blocks, but on Friday nights Times Square is full of tourists, and they block the sidewalks and corners. To top it off, my wife and my daughter walk much more slowly than I do so it took twice as long to walk from Times Square to Penn as it does when I do it every day after work. Our train got to Jamaica and was canceled due to equipment problems, and they put us on a local to Babylon. It was quite crowded and noisy.   On a happier note, one of the other people who had been on the canceled train with us was a teacher who teaches for the Suffolk County BOCES (Board of Cooperative Education Services) and was at two of the schools that my daughter attended (the Wing Learning Center in Islip and the Masera Learning Center in West Islip). She recognized my daughter after several years and said that she grew into a pretty teenager.  We finally got in to Islip 50 minutes late.

inside man; baseball: real and fantasy

This morning the Islip Fire Department began its annual interior firefighter qualifications. A few members constructed a maze to simulate doing a search & rescue inside a residential structure. Several of us put on our turnout gear and a self contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) but with a mask that was blacked out to make visibility difficult. In this way intense smoke conditions would be simulated. We had to crawl on our knees though a set of simulated rooms, including rafters and a tunnel. It was quite tiring but I felt good afterwards because I passed the test this year. At 50+, I am the Department’s second oldest interior firefighter. I just got e/mails from AOL Sports Alerts and also from www.mlb.com that both the Yankees and Mets lost their spring training games today. I also signed up to run a fantasy baseball team on www.cbsportsline.com.  My team is called the X-Niners in a league called Motown Tigers 2007. The team's name refers to my first college, Marist College, located on Route 9 in Poughkeepsie NY. I only lasted one year there before my parents yanked me out before the school could throw me out. Therefore I am an Ex Route Niner.
